Dermatology is a discipline devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of skin disease, It is also a medical speciality with an obligation for making people look as good as possible. Today, a greater number of patients consult us not necessarily for the treatment of a cutaneous malady but also for a cosmetic purpose. Such patients hope for corrective measures that might eliminate or reduce unpleasant features, rejuvenate their skin, and maybe even delay the action of time and nature on their appearance. For many people, and with good reason, a well cared for appearance is fundamental.

Combining these two aspects, medicine and cosmetics, is the goal of the 2nd World Congress of the International Academy of Cosmetic Dermatology. The Organizing Committee is anticipating the Congress to be a global gathering of dermatologists, other clinical and surgical researchers, physicians of many specialties with interests in the cosmetic aspects of medicine, and members of the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry.

During the three days of the Rio World Congress, many aspects of Cosmetic Dermatology will be discussed: innovations, indications and contraindications of therapeutic measures, and cosmetics delaying skin aging. The Organizing Committee has placed considerable emphasis on the interdisciplinary aspects of cosmetic dermatology and has geared the scientific program to provide an in-depth understanding of all aspects of cosmetic dermatology. The interaction of cosmetics with dermatology will be an integral part of the program, lest we forget that the cure of many dermatological diseases is merely a question of appearance.

The City of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was chosen to host the Second World Congress of the IACD in 2000 because of the long-standing interests of Brazilian dermatologists in the many areas of cosmetic dermatology. The Congress will be held in the Convention Center of the Sofitel Rio Palace Hotel, located at the famous Copacabana Beach, November 9-11.

The beauty of Rio, known as “Cidade Maravilhosa” (Wonderful City) can be enjoyed not only for its natural and, splendorous landscape but also for the beautiful contrasts between the beaches, mountains, and forests, each embellished by the delights of the tropical climate. Rio is also renown for its outstanding cultural activities, its wonderful cuisines, and it famous night-life.

See you at the Rio Congress of the IACD.
